What is exposure management? From asset inventory to what to fix first

SHORT ANSWER

Exposure management puts asset data, vulnerability findings and threat signals together to decide which exposures to fix first, and routes the work to the people who own each asset. It starts from risk rather than from the inventory, but it depends on one: a finding on an asset nobody owns is hard to fix. It fits when you already have findings and the question is order and ownership.

How does exposure management work?

An exposure management platform collects findings from vulnerability scanners, cloud security tools and external discovery, attaches each finding to an asset, and adds context: how important the asset is, whether it faces the internet, and whether the vulnerability is being exploited.

Public signals help with that last point. The CISA Known Exploited Vulnerabilities catalog lists vulnerabilities with reliable evidence of active exploitation. FIRST's Exploit Prediction Scoring System estimates the probability that a published vulnerability will be exploited in the next 30 days. CVSS scores severity, not likelihood.

The output is an ordered list of fixes with an owner for each, often routed into ticketing or automated workflows, and a way to show that exposure went down.

When does it fit?

  • Your scanners produce more findings than your team can fix.
  • Regulators or customers expect continuous evidence that exposures are under control.
  • Many teams own assets, and findings stall because nobody knows whose they are.
  • You already run a vulnerability management platform and want to build on it.

Where does it stop?

Exposure management ranks what it can attach to an asset. If the inventory underneath is incomplete, the ranking is incomplete too, and findings on unknown or unowned assets drop out of sight. Pair it with an inventory approach that you trust: CAASM aggregation where your tools disagree, your own collection where they are thin, or EASM where the internet-facing side is unknown.

Which finder answers point to EXPO?

  • +1 if two to four teams, for example IT, security and cloud (How many teams own assets?)
  • +2 if many teams or business units, and owners are often unknown (How many teams own assets?)
  • +3 if regulators or customers expect evidence of control coverage at any time (How much compliance pressure do you face?)
  • +4 if tenable (What do you already run?)
  • +3 if rapid7 (What do you already run?)

Not in our sources is not a no. Ask the vendor, and send us a public source if one exists.

What should you ask a vendor?

  • Which sources of findings do you read, and which do you produce yourself?
  • How do you attach a finding to the right asset and owner?
  • Which threat signals do you use to rank, for example the CISA KEV catalog or EPSS?
  • How do you show that exposure went down after fixes?

Questions people ask

Is exposure management the same as vulnerability management?

It is broader. Vulnerability management finds and patches vulnerabilities; exposure management adds asset context, external exposure, threat signals and ownership to decide what matters first.

Does Axonius scan for vulnerabilities?

No. Axonius reads findings from the tools you connect, such as Tenable Vulnerability Management or Rapid7 InsightVM, for which it documents adapters, attaches them to the correlated asset record and prioritizes them with its own engine; the scanning happens in your scanners.

Which vendors here describe exposure management?

Armis Centrix, Axonius and Tenable One describe it on the pages we read; Censys ASM, JupiterOne, Microsoft Defender EASM, Qualys CSAM and Rapid7 Surface Command describe it with a condition. The table above is computed from our data.
